Louise Ayala, age 41,
teaches elementary school in Southern California. She had lens implants in 1990, as
well as Lupus, retinal detachments, and surgery for glaucoma. She had special
"prisms" in her glasses to eliminate double vision.
Her wish list included driving and reading better. She acknowledged that she could read newsprint with a magnifier but wanted to read with glasses instead. She has a drivers license but felt unsafe, because she could not see signs and obstacles soon enough. Dr. Shuldiner prescribed bioptic telescopic glasses with the special prisms for driving. She now see signs and obstacles twice as fast as before and drives more comfortably. Dr. Shuldiner also prescribed special magnifying bifocals to read newsprint without her magnifying glass.
Phyllis Robinson, age 57, has macular degeneration. She was a business licensing clerk, but retired on disability due to her deteriorating eyesight.
She wished to be able to read better, and to drive again. In addition, she wanted help for seeing the television better. Dr. Shuldiner prescribed bioptic telescopic spectacles for driving, with special "drilled" sunglasses to fit over the telescopes. Phyllis also uses them for watching television. Also, special "doublet microscope" spectacles for reading newsprint were provided. Phyllis is very pleased to be driving again. Charles Lewis, age 77, is a retired USAF Commander and retired engineering consultant. From Canada, he lives with his wife in Palm Springs, CA during the winter months. He has macular degeneration. His health is good. He wanted to be able to drive, see faces of people, see at the theatre and see nature and scenery on trips; maybe even pilot an airplane again. He already reads with the help of a closed circuit television (cctv) system. Dr. Shuldiner prescribed bioptic telescopic spectacles for distance vision tasks like seeing faces, scenery and at the theatre. He now enjoys the drive to and from Canada. He is tremendously happy and has his confidence back.
