“I Can Read Again”: Jorge’s Return to the Page
Every morning, Jorge Pena liked to sit at his kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee and his Bible. For years, that was his favorite way to begin the day.
Then his eyesight started to fade.
At first it was a little harder to make out the words. Then it became impossible to follow the lines. Eventually, Jorge stopped reading altogether. He didn’t say much about it, but it changed his mornings in a way that left a quiet gap.
Doctors diagnosed him with glaucoma. Later, a retinal detachment took away all vision in his left eye.
He Thought It Was Over. It Wasn’t.
By the time Jorge came to Low Vision of Southern California, he had accepted that reading might never be possible again. He wasn’t looking for a miracle. Just a way to feel normal again.
Dr. Shuldiner and the team introduced him to a 6X doublet microscope lens. It looked like a small, simple tool. But when Jorge held it to the page, something clicked.
He saw words. Full sentences. The small print that had been out of reach for so long.
“I feel like a kid again. I can read what I want for the first time in years.”
That moment didn’t just restore his ability to read. It brought something else back too—hope.
What Made the Difference?
Jorge’s left eye had no usable vision. But his right eye still had some potential.
The doublet lens gave him the magnification he needed to use that remaining sight. With the lens in hand and a few positioning adjustments, Jorge could read small print clearly and independently.
For someone like Jorge, this kind of low vision device isn’t just an accessory. It’s life-changing.
Why Stories Like Jorge’s Matter
Many people with glaucoma or retinal disease are told there’s nothing more that can be done. In some cases, that’s true. But in many others, vision rehabilitation is still possible.
IALVS specializes in helping patients make the most of the vision they still have. That includes tools like telescope glasses, reading lenses, and magnifiers that can be customized to each person’s situation.
These tools don’t cure anything. They don’t reverse damage. But they can make daily life better. They can help someone read again. And sometimes, that’s everything.
